Write a Letter of Resignation and Resign Professionally

Writing a resignation letter doesn't have to be time-consuming, and resigning professionally doesn't have to be hard. These tips will help.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep it short. Keep your letter short and to the point. Say something like, “Please let this letter serve as two weeks’ notice that I will be resigning my position as (title) on (date). I have enjoyed my time working at (company) and appreciate all of the opportunities afforded to me. Sincerely, (you).” Copy the human resources department and maybe your manager’s boss.

  2. Step 2

Keep it positive. Resist all temptation to express any negative emotion whatsoever. You might hate your boss. You might hate the way the company is run. You might be full of anger and ready to burst. But you don’t want to burn any bridges. Be happy that you’re leaving and remain friendly with your boss so he or she will provide you with a good reference in the future.

  3. Step 3

Keep it professional. Give two full weeks’ notice. And even after your letter has been written and you are counting down the hours until your last day, remain professional, helpful, and hard-working. Your colleagues will appreciate it and remember you for it.
