Craft a letter of resignation that is positive and professional.

Writing a resignation letter doesn't have to be time-consuming, and resigning professionally doesn't have to be hard. Even if you are leaving because of poor conditions at work, write your resignation letter in a respectful manner. Going out on a good note reflects positively on you, especially in the working world where having a good reputation is essential.

Instructions

    • 1

Give your employer two weeks notice. Even after your letter has been written and you are counting down the hours until your last day, remain professional, helpful and hard working. Your colleagues will appreciate it and remember you for it.

    • 2

Keep the letter short and to the point. Begin your letter with a statement such as "Please let this letter serve as two weeks' notice that I will be resigning my position as (title) on (date). I have enjoyed my time working at (company) and appreciate all of the opportunities afforded to me. Sincerely, (you)." Address the letter to your direct supervisor and copy the letter to the human resources department.

You may provide a quick reason for why you're leaving such as moving to a new city, finding a new opportunity or pursuing a graduate education. This is not necessary.

    • 4

Keep it positive. Resist all temptation to express any negative emotion whatsoever. You may hate your boss and you may hate the way the company is run, but you don't want to burn any bridges. Be happy that you're leaving and remain friendly with your boss so he will provide you with a good reference in the future
