Step 1
If you receive a wedding announcement card in the mail, but no invitation to the wedding, you may send a gift if you wish, but it is not required. A congratulatory card will suffice.
-
Step 2
If you attend the wedding, then you should always give a gift. The only exception is a destination wedding that is very costly for you to travel to. In that case, the fact that you went counts as a gift. A nice idea would be to send the couple a framed picture you took at the wedding when you get back.

Step 3
If you've been invited to a good friend's wedding, but can't afford to do both, tell her that she can either have the matching set of towels or you, but you can't afford to do both.
-
Step 4
If you are invited to a good friend/relative's wedding but can't attend because of a prior commitment, you should send a gift soon after you receive your invitation. If you are invited to a wedding by someone you are not close with, send them a congratulatory card with your RSVP declining the invitation. The exception to this is in the case of being invited to the wedding of a business connection. In that case, you should send a gift, even if you do not attend the wedding.
