How to Make Your Own Gold Jewelry Cleaner

Gold jewelry is beautiful and looks good with anything from a formal gown to a pair of old worn blue jeans. But the more you wear it, the more it needs to be cleaned. Dirt and oils from the skin adhere to gold jewelry and make it look old and dull. You can take it to a jewelry store and have it cleaned professionally, but you can save time and money if you clean your jewelry yourself at home.

Things You'll Need

• Ammonia
• Mild detergent
• Bowl
• Toothbrush
• Chamois cloth

Instructions

1. Mix one tablespoon of ammonia, one tablespoon of mild dishwashing detergent and three cups of warm water. Stir the ingredients until well mixed. Don't shake them because you will get too much sudsing.

2. Soak your jewelry in the cleaner for seven to 10 minutes. Then a soft-bristled toothbrush to lightly scrub. Do not scrub vigorously because you will scratch the gold. Rinse with warm water.

3. Rub jewelry lightly with a chamois cloth to shine.
