Learn how to make your computer start up faster when you turn it on!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer
  1. Step 1

Go to your start menu and click on run.

  2. Step 2

In the prompt enter msconfig and hit enter. A screen will appear that says System Configuration Utility

  3. Step 3

Click on the start up tab. This will show all of the programs that windows runs as soon as you turn on your computer. Deselect programs that you do not need to run as part of your initial start-up. These can include programs like AIM, iTunes, Digital Camera Software, and basically anything that makes an icon in the bottom right hand of your screen near the clock. DO NOT disable your firewall software or virus software. Click apply after you have deselected all the programs you want.

  4. Step 4

Next go to the services tab. Select "Hide All Microsoft Services" Then disable programs that you do not want to run during start-up. Again DO NOT disable your firewall or anti-virus software. Click Apply and close out.

  5. Step 5

You will be prompted to restart your computer. Go ahead and restart and see how much faster your computer starts up! You will get a message from the System Configuration. Make sure you select "don't show this message again" to prevent it from appearing everytime you turn on your computer.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are worried about deselecting programs, type the program name into a search engine and see what it does. You can also take a screen shot of the System Unity Configuration by make it your active screen, and pressing ALT + PRNT SCREEN. Then open up Microsoft Word and hit either paste or CTRL+V. Then you will always have a record of what you kept and didn't, making it easier if you decide you disabled something you didn't want to.
  • NEVER DESELECT YOUR FIREWALL OR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE
  • You caution when disabling programs as some are needed for your computer to run properly. If you don't know what it is and can find out, then leave it alone.
