Building your own garden can be very fun and rewarding. Nothing to me is better than picking fresh vegetables and herbs for cooking dishes and preparing salads. Here's a few pointers when creating your own garden.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gardening tools
  • Top soil
  • Plant Food
  1. Step 1

Decide what it is you want to grow in your garden to determine how much space you should allocate. If you are growing tomato plants, they can really consume up a decent amount of space. You really need to try and plan ahead, or you may have to go back and extend your garden as the plants grow.

  2. Step 2

Once you have determined the size of the garden, get your shovel ready. If you currently are going to be cutting out a segment of your lawn for this, you will need to remove the grass in that area. Try to cut cubes out of the grass and lift them. Once the grass is out, try and remove some of the soil from the grass roots by hitting the bottom of the roots. You may want to keep the grass that you are removing and start a mulch pile with it.

  3. Step 3

Once you have your area designate for your garden grass free, you will need to loosen up the soil and remove some rocks. I leave small rocks and pebbles. Anything smaller than a quarter i leave. All other rocks i suggest removing. Try and loosen up the first 4-6 inches of top soil

  4. Step 4

Once you have removed the grass, rocks, and loosened up the soil, now would be a great time to either put up a little fence around your garden area or use bricks to segment it from your lawn. This helps kill the grass under the bricks and prevent the grass from growing in the garden as well.

  5. Step 5

After you add your border, be it fence or brick, add some good top soil. I used miracle grow topsoil that i purchased form home depot for roughly $8.00 a bag. Try and get about 2 inches of this topsoil evenly throughout your garden.

  6. Step 6

After you have added your topsoil, start planting seeds or plants. Try to spread them out if they are going to be large plants, thus giving them more room to grow. Also if you have vegetables and fruits, it may be a good time to put in some pest deterring plants like marigolds, garlic, aster, chrysanthemums, etc. This will help keep the pests away from your fruits and veggies.

  7. Step 7

Finally, Water your garden frequently. I also recommend using plant food, which can be purchased at home depot, etc. It is typically dried out fertilizer that you sprinkle around the base of your plants. This really helped my garden BOOM this year.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plan out what you are going to grow before segmenting area for the garden
  • remove rocks and grass
  • use good topsoil
  • use plants to deter pests like ants
  • use plant food and water regulalry
