Donkeys are very smart animals and can be easily trained to allow a halter, with patience and perseverance

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Properly fitted halter
  • Lead

    Young Donkey

The first step is to gain the donkey's trust and make him comfortable with the halter. The hardware can make noise which you want him to associate with positive things, so feed him treats and pet him while holding the halter and shaking it gently.

  2. Step 2

Once the donkey seems comfortable around the halter, and doesn't shy away when you shake it, try placing it on him slowly without fastening it. Stay clam and keep your voice low and even. Pet and scratch the donkey while you hold the halter in place. If he seems anxious, remove the halter and try again when he is calm.

  3. Step 3

After a few times of putting on the halter, buckle it in place. Feed treats and pet the donkey. After a few minutes, remove the halter.
Repeat, each time leaving the halter on for a longer period of time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't try to force your donkey to take the halter--they can be very stubborn and will make training harder
  • Only work with your donkey when you are calm and unhurried
