Open a Bank Account With a Student Visa

Students in a country that is not their country of citizenship may need to open a bank account. Typically, banks restrict account holders to those who are residents of the country. However, students with a student visa can open a bank account. Learn how to open a bank account when on a student visa to obtain essential financial services when studying abroad.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact the financial institution with which you wish to open a bank account. Smaller institutions, such as local credit unions and small banks, typically make it difficult to open a bank account when you're on a student visa. However, most larger banks are willing to accommodate your requests.

  2. Step 2

Consult the national government of the country in which you are studying. Many governments keep a publicly-accessible database of all banks within the country. For example, the Department of Finance Canada (Ministere des Finances Canada) even operates an online utility allowing individuals to compare bank rates in Canada.

  3. Step 3

Ask your college, university or educational institution. Most operate student resource centers that are able to connect you to a bank that allows individuals with study permits or student visas to apply for and open a bank account.

  4. Step 4

Fill out an application. You will need to provide an address of residence and may need to show proof of living there. Accepted documents typically include a utility bill, rent check or similar document. In addition, bring your original student visa or student permit and photo identification such as a passport. After the bank reviews your student visa or permit and ascertains your identity, they will typically issue you a standard student banking or checking account.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ensure your student visa matches the name on your photo ID or the bank may reject your application.
