Depending on where you live snow tires might be a must for your car in order to commute in the morning. Roads slippery from ice and not yet cleared makes many drivers turn to buying snow tires to get the extra traction. If you are in an icy part of the world and need to buy snow tires for your car, here is what you should look for when you go to buy snow tires.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First thing to remember is the difference between regular tires and snow tires. Snow tires have very specific patterns in their tread which allows the tire to grip the snow and ice better then the regular tires on cars. They are also made of a different quality of rubber which can stand up to the elements of winter much better.

  2. Step 2

When looking for snow tires to buy for the winter you need to understand the tread and rubber and compare it against regular tires. Get an idea of what stands them apart. This will help you make the right decision between snow tires.

  3. Step 3

The next thing you need to remember is that all four tires should be snow tires, it is not just enough to replace two. When a car spins out it is because one or many of the tires failed to grip the surface, this is the case in the winter and driving on ice. It is best to put on snow tires for all of your tires.

  4. Step 4

Snow tires are not the same as putting chains on your tires. Many people put chains on their wheels but this is not a long term or winter long solution to ice filled driving. Snow chains can cause damage to roads and driveways while snow tires are built for normal day to day use with or without winter conditions.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you have your snow tires put on be sure to keep your regular tires and store them for the winter. Snow tires are not best in normal weather as they wear easier and can be louder then regular tires when driving.
