This is how to naturally cool your home during the summer. You can start in the spring for best results, but a lower temperature can be achieved if started during summer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows that open with fly screens.
  • Fans and/or window fans
  1. Step 1

During the coolest part of the day, open all windows in home on all floors, including attic. Place fans in windows on bottom floor pulling air into home. Use what you have, one fan is effective. If you have a stairwell, place another fan near there to push air up the stairs.

  2. Step 2

On top floor, open windows and put fan in window that will push air out of the home. This will push all the hot air outside, pulling the cooler air from below.

  3. Step 3

In the morning before it gets starts to get warmer, take the fans out of the first floor windows and shut them. Keep all other fans running. If cooler home is wanted, have fans running pushing the air towards the stairs. Also for a lower temperature, curtains or sun/heat blocking material can be used on 1st floor. You should note a marked difference in the temperature of your home if not right away, you should notice the difference within a week.

  4. Step 4

Ranch style homes and one story homes: Place fans on cooler side of home to push air into home and fans on hotter side of home pushing air out of home. As the sun moves during day, the fans may need to be moved in direction. Key is circulation, heat rises. The more circulation, the cooler the home. Best results is starting this process when it warms up enough in spring to open windows. Hottest days of summer when even nights are hot, do not open lower floor windows. Stay cool, and have a great summer.
