How to Buy Used Drywall Tools

Drywall tools are used to properly install the material that forms walls in most homes and buildings. The essential tools help cut the materials, secure the drywall in place with nails or screws, and apply tape and mud to the drywall seams.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of the tools that you will need, such as 6-, 8- and 10-inch taping knives (to spread the mud), a razor knife (to cut drywall and tape), a drill, a hammer, a keyhole saw, a dremel tool (to cut boxes in the drywall for electrical outlets etc.) and a sanding pole (to smooth dry mud).

  2. Step 2

Look for auction sites or classifieds online or search for local sellers through the classifieds under the headings "construction tools" or "used tools." Buying locally allows you to see the tools before you pay for them.

  3. Step 3

Compare prices by looking at new tools online or at the local hardware store to find out what the price is so you can determine whether the used price is a good deal.

  4. Step 4

Inspect the tools before you buy them, if possible. Make sure there is no rust, nicks or deep scratches on the taping knives or they will not smooth out the mud properly. Test drills, saws and other electric tools before purchasing.

  5. Step 5

Purchase the tools from a reliable seller, meaning someone who has a high "seller rating" on eBay, or locally from someone with tools in hand.

  6. Step 6

Clean the tools thoroughly before using to ensure proper performance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get advice from an experienced professional about what tools you need or what will make the drywall installation easier. Name brand power tools, such as Dewalt, typically give you the best performance, especially with drills, keyhole saws and dremel tools. Do not attempt to tape drywall if you do not know what you are doing. If the drywall is not taped properly, it will ruin your paint job.
  • Remember to round the corners slightly on the taping knives in order to prevent tearing the drywall.
