How to Fertilize a Grape Vine

Many people think that if they fertilized their grape vine last year the nutrients will remain in the soil. Actually, this is incorrect. You risk stunting or even killing your grape vine if you do not fertilize annually in a correct manner. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Nitrogen fertilizer
  • Phosphorous fertilizer
  • Potassium sulfate fertilizer
  • Garden hose
  • Basic micro-element fertilizer (contains conventional levels of magnesium, manganese and zinc)
  • Hand rake

Instructions

Apply your nitrogen-based fertilizer in the spring. You should do this as soon as the first shoots appear. Nitrogen has to be watered into the soil, so spread on a thick layer in a large area around the vine. Then use your garden hose to water it in with a light stream of water that does not disrupt the soil.

Work in the phosphorous fertilizer with a hand rake. Phosphorous can be applied once every two to three years only in the immediate area around the vine. It has to be "combed" into the soil using a hand rake. You can do this once the vine has sprouted.

Apply potassium fertilizer via irrigation. You can do this with a sprinkler, a watering can or a garden sprayer. Target the root area at the very base of the vine. Do not apply more than 2 pounds of the potassium sulfate fertilizer to the soil.

Use the conventional micro-element fertilizer for the rest of the components. These are only needed in small quantities, and usually your grape vine will do just fine on a normal fertilizer. However, if you notice spotting or browning of leaves, then you may need to test your soil to see if there is a shortage of some particular mineral. This fertilizer just needs to be spread around the plant and then watered in at the beginning of the growing season.
