Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a shift knob for your vehicle. If you are using an aftermarket shift knob, make sure it's specifically designed for the year, make and model of your vehicle. Shift knobs made for other applications are difficult, and sometimes impossible, to modify.

    • 2

Uninstall the old shift knob by turning it counterclockwise. If the vehicle is old, you might have to wear gloves to get a better grip (the longer the knobs are on, the more difficult they are to remove). Once the knob is fully unscrewed, it will easily release from the gear selector.

    • 3

Install the new shift knob by placing it on the gear selector and turning clockwise. The amount of rotations will depend on your vehicle, but you need to tighten it until it becomes very difficult to turn. Try the new shift knob out, and make sure it feels sturdy when selecting gears.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan on using an aftermarket shift knob, most auto part stores carry different styles. If you are looking for an original factory shift knob, contact the local dealer for your make of vehicle.

  • Make sure the shift knob is completely tightened before operating your vehicle. A loose shift knob can be a danger to you and others.
