How to Install Trex Decking

1
Think about where you intend to install the deck and how it will be utilized. How much of the day will it be in the sun? What will you need to do to prepare the area? Are there any trees, fences or sidewalks that will need to be moved? What about water and power lines? Is it clear of any HVAC units? Where are the underground utilities? Will you need to get a permit for construction? Taking careful account of the location before building can save you time and money.

Familiarize yourself with the product, its features and how the pieces work collectively. Go to a local building supply or home improvement store and see the product in person. Pick it up, play with it, get a feel for how it fits together. Assess whether you are physically prepared to undertake the project. Visit the Trex website. Take the "Do It Yourself" quiz. Look over the many products and options. Think about what colors and special features you want. Use the online design tools at the website to create a plan for your deck or download one of the free predesigned plans.

Once you have your plan, create a material and tool list. Don't cut your materials short--allot for at least a 10 percent overage. Include any fasteners, screws, adhesives, blocks, supports, skirts, sleeves, braces, brackets and supports you may need. Arrange to have the items delivered to the site but not where they will be in the way, or have someone help you pick up and deliver the material if you plan to do this yourself. Review the online videos and installation guide several more times to ensure you understand the process.

Prepare the building site. Clear any brush, lawn items and debris. Level and smooth the ground. Put in your footers, piers and foundation. Install your band, joists and girders. Make sure the distance between joists does not exceed local code. Install floor decking; allot for proper gapping. Construct any stair units with proper step height and tread according to local code. Install the railing, making sure to meet any height requirements. Once finished, double-check all deck components. If you have a permit, have the completed deck approved by your local authority.

After the deck is built, make sure to clean the job site of all debris and waste. If you have them, keep several full pieces of decking, railing, and balusters for future repairs so the color will match closely. Smooth the areas around and under the deck and put in any desired landscaping or irrigation systems. Familiarize yourself with the proper care and maintenance techniques for your new Trex deck.

Tips & Warnings
Have at least two adult assistants for installation. Trex will release tannin for up to 12 weeks after installation. Typical chalk-line products will stain Trex. For samples, try your local dealer.
Do not pressure-wash your Trex deck. Do not glue your Trex deck. Using bleach or acid products on your deck may change the color. Hire a local contractor if you're not ready to do it yourself.
