Things You'll Need:
- Two pieces of 3/4-inch-thick wood (height of the doorframe)
- Three pieces of 3/4-inch-thick wood (width of the doorframe minus the width of the side pieces)
- Hammer
- Screwdriver
- Three Door Flush Mount Hinges
- One Screen Door Handle
- Screening
- Staple Gun
- Molding (for around screen)
- Circular Saw
- Door Return
- Four Wood Brackets
- Tacking Nails for Molding
-
Step 1
Measure the height and width of the doorframe. The top, middle and bottom wood pieces will be placed inside the left- and right-side pieces. Therefore, measure the top and bottom pieces minus the width of the side pieces. Cut the wood to size with a circular saw. You can angle the corners to meet each other or use a standard board-meets-board as pictured.
-
Step 2
Use one wood bracket to secure each corner of the wood to the other piece. See photo for placement.
-
Step 3
Place a piece of screen in the top section and staple to the sides of the wood frame. Place a piece of screen in the bottom section of the door and staple to the sides of the wood frame.
-
Step 4
Cut the molding to fit inside each screen panel on both sides. You will place the molding on one side and use some tacking nails to attach it over the stapled screen. Do the same thing on the other side of the doorframe, tacking the molding to cover the edge of the screen. Chalking can be used, but it does not look as nice.
-
Step 5
Place the first flush mount hinge seven inches from the top, the bottom hinge 11 inches from the bottom and the middle hinge in the center of the top and bottom hinges. Attach one side to the doorframe and the other side to the screen door.
-
Step 6
Attach the screen-door handle on each side of the door at a height that is comfortable for you. This is not a latching screen door. It is a free-opening and -closing door.
-
Step 7
Attach the door return to the doorframe and the centerboard of the screen door.
