When you are just learning to make your own homemade cards, it is a good idea to buy a kit rather than spend a whole bunch of money for supplies you don't necessarily need. 1
Choose a kit with a theme. Whether you are making birthday cards, anniversary cards or Christmas cards, it is best to choose a kit that includes the proper colors and/or embellishments for the occasion. It makes it a lot easier for a beginner to learn how to mix and match color schemes and designs when the options are more limited.

Make sure the kit includes blank cards, envelopes and stickers. This is a basic kit and is usually best for a beginner. Someone with experience might require more embellishments, such as rubber stamps, brads, ribbons and charms, to add more decoration and dimension to their cards.

Select an adhesive to use with your card making kit. It is generally not included, however, it is a necessity. Glue sticks, tape runners and double sided tape are all good choices. However, it is best to choose an adhesive that is acid free and archival safe for your card making. Many people save cards that they particularly enjoy, and choosing a good adhesive will ensure that they last without yellowing.
