Building inspectors certify that newly built or previously owned buildings meet a state's building code requirements. Inspectors are hired by prospective buyers to inspect the condition of the structure and report any issues before the purchase takes place. They also report code violations but are not expected to enforce them. Building inspectors may also work for a city or county government to certify that structures meet set building code requirements. The state of Florida requires that building inspectors be certified to perform inspections in one or more of six categories: building, mechanical, coastal construction, electrical, plumbing, and one and two family dwellings.

Meet the age requirement. All applicants must be at least 18 years old to become certified.

Prove that you have at least five years of inspection and/or construction experience in the category that you are applying for certification. Postsecondary education can be substituted for experience to satisfy this requirement.

Take and pass the two required certification examinations. You will need to pass a technical examination that covers the certification category of your choice. You will also need to take and pass the Florida Principles and Practice Examination, unless you qualify for the Inspector by Endorsement certification. Pay for and submit your certification application. You will need to complete your application and pay the required application fee for each certification category you are seeking. With your application, you must provide proof of your experience and/or education.
