How to Take Iron Pills While Pregnant

While pregnant, you will find that your body's need for iron will increase. While some women's bodies will easily compensate, others will not. If your body does not produce enough iron, you will become anemic. If you become anemic, you will feel weak and often dizzy. You may have an increased heart rate and feel "foggy- headed." Your doctor can run a simple blood test to see if you are anemic. If you find that you are, your doctor will prescribe iron pills

Things You'll Need:

  • Food
  • Glass of water (8 ounces)
  1. Step 1

    Eat a healthy meal. Taking iron pills on an empty stomach can cause nausea and vomiting.

  2. Step 2

    Fill your glass with water. You can use bottled water if you prefer. If you find that the iron pills upset your stomach, try taking them with orange juice.

  3. Step 3

    Take a drink of water and hold it in your mouth. Place the iron pill in your mouth and swallow. Swallow the pill whole for maximum absorption.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can take your iron pill at any time during the day.
  • You should only take iron pills while pregnant if your doctor advises you to do so. Iron pills can cause constipation.
