Although the Internet is a great way for photographers to display their work, it is also a convenient way for people to steal pictures. One way to prevent pirates from stealing copyrighted photos is to add a watermark to the image. A watermark is a washed-out image placed on top of the photograph. You can turn practically any photo into a watermark with Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the background. Double-click on the background layer to unlock the layer. Select the part of the image that you want to use for your watermark. Go to "Select">"Inverse". Press the back space to delete the rest of the image and turn it into a transparency.

    • 2

Add the copyright text. Select the "Type" tool. Hold down the "Alt" key and type 0169 on a PC or Press "Option G" on a Mac to create the copyright symbol. Enter your name, slogan, or any other text. Highlight the text and change the font size and style with the "Text" drop-down boxes.

    • 3

Save the watermark image. Although the image is not watermarked yet, select "File">"Save." Select a convenient location if you plan to use this watermark on multiple images. Save the image as a GIF file; this format will retain your transparent background.

    • 4

Apply the watermark. Open the watermark GIF image. Select "Select>All" and copy the entire image. Open an image that you want to apply the watermark to. Paste the watermark onto a new layer. Resize the watermark to the desired size.

    • 5

Adjust the opacity. Select the layer with the watermark. Slide the "Opacity" slide-bar to adjust the opacity of the watermark as desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the Photoshop version of the watermark in case you need to edit it later.

  • Always keep a copy of the photo without a watermark.
