This retired racing Greyhound is now a loving pet!

Many people are aware that retired racing Greyhounds are available for adoption. But what most people don't realize is that retired Greyhounds, although the can become wonderful pets, need to be somewhat reborn. Racing Greyhounds are generally retired at two years of age and have spent their entire lives at a race track. They are not used to common daily sites and sounds that other dogs get familiar with at an early age. So retired Greyhounds need special parents who are willing to take the extra steps needed to give these loving dogs a safe and secure home.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK -- If you think you might like to adopt a retired racing Greyhound you should do your homework and get to know all there is to know about the actual adoption process and what to expect when you bring your new dog home. There are several highly respected organizations that will give you all the information you need to know if a retired racing Greyhound is the right addition for you and your family.

CONTACT A GREYHOUND ORGANIZATION -- The Greyhound Project is a nonprofit organization run by volunteers who are all Greyhound adopters. They are devoted to educating potential adopters. The National Greyhound Adoption Program is another nonprofit with a wealth of information. Greyhound Angels Adoption is also a site worth checking out. MAKE YOUR DECISION -- Adopting a retired racing Greyhound is not a decision that should be taken lightly. You must learn all you can about the breed and the specific responsibilities that come with caring for and training a dog that spent its life being trained to race. But if you decide that you can give one of these wonderful dogs a good home you will find that the extra effort needed to get your new pet familiar with family life is well worth it.
