Draining the oil from a 3.0 Mercruiser may seem difficult. You may be able to slide an oil catch pan into the bilge compartment, but then there is no way to get the pan out without spilling oil everywhere when you are done. Mechanics may have various suggestions such as put trash bags in the bilge area and let the oil drain into them or install a drain hose to the drain plug on the bottom of your Mercruiser. However, the simplest and easiest way to drain the oil from a 3.0 Mercruiser is to use a vacuum pump widely available in most marine shops.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vacuum pump
  • Drain pan
  • New Oil
  1. Step 1

Unscrew the oil fill cap on top of the engine block. Pull the dipstick out of the dip tube as well.

  2. Step 2

Insert the drain tube into the dip tube and turn on the vacuum. Allow the pump to draw the oil out of the dip tube and into the drain pan until there is no more left in the engine block.

  3. Step 3

Fill the 3.0 Mercruiser with the weight, amount and brand of oil recommended by the manufacturer in your owner's manual. Screw the fill cap back on and reinsert the dipstick.

  4. Step 4

Check the dipstick to make sure the oil level is within the recommended range.

Tips & Warnings
  • Overfilling the engine can lead to dangerously high oil pressure that could cause engine damage or oil leaks.
