How to Make a Homemade Solar Shower
A solar shower is a sensible and convenient option for cleaning up after a day in the garden or by the pool. A simple solar shower is made from a sturdy container filled with water that absorbs heat from the sun. A black coating improves heat absorption and cool water can be added from the top of the container to create a temperature suitable for a shower. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use masking tape to mark a spot on the side of the garbage can, one inch from the bottom. On the opposite side, mark a spot four inches below the top edge. The lower marking will be the location for the outlet hose for the shower; the top marking will be the connection point for your garden hose to fill the container.
-
2
Drill a one inch hole at each the marked locations. Apply silicone sealant around the inside and outside of each hole.

3
Place an O-ring on each of the adapters. Insert an adapter into each hole and place another O-ring on the inside of the container. Apply adhesive and screw a threaded coupling onto the inside portion of each adapter. Allow the adhesive to cure for 24 hours.
-
4
Screw a ball valve socket onto the adapter near the bottom of the container if desired. Note: An additional adapter may be needed for the ball valve socket.
-
5
Connect the sprinkler attachment to one end of a short garden hose. Attach the other end of the garden hose to the ball valve socket or adapter at the bottom of the container.
-
6
Attach a longer garden hose to an outdoor tap. Connect the other end to the adapter near the top of the container. Secure the lid on your container.
-
7
Position the container securely above the desired area for your shower. Choose a location with maximum sunlight exposure. Fill your container two-thirds full and allow the sun to heat the water for several hours, depending on your location.

Tips & Warnings
Consider building a sturdy frame to hold the solar water tank. Remember that a gallon of water weighs about 8.5 pounds, so factor the heavy load during design and construction.
Depending on the amount of sun exposure, the water in the container can be very hot, so be careful when using the shower. When choosing a location for your shower, consider the runoff from the shower to avoid seepage in your home's foundation.
