Step 1
Once you recognize the officiating is not correct, call a time out. The time out serves a dual purpose. First, gather your team. Next, take a second to prepare yourself mentally for a tough afternoon.
-
Step 2
Players are smart and probably recognize the problem. Make sure you do not allow them to blame the officiating for problems on the court. Use this as a teachable moment about adversity and not using excuses.
-
Step 3
In my experience, most bad youth basketball officials are not cheats. They are just novices caught up in a bad situation. Do not direct any negative comments toward the referee at any time.
-
Step 4
If at all possible speak with the referee during the breaks, and tactfully let him in on your concerns. Pay attention to his body language and facial expression. If he is not receptive, discontinue communication.
-
Step 5
Remember your players are a reflection of you. Effectively handling a bad situation like this sends a message of self control and discipline to your team.
