Things You'll Need:
- Dog crate/carrier just big enough for the dog to stand up, turn around, and lay down.
- Harness
-
Step 1
Your puppy needs to have food and water available to them at all times, up to 12 weeks of age. Vets do not recommend trying to potty train a puppy until it is 12 weeks of age. Buy a crate just big enough for the puppy to stand up, turn around, and lay down comfortably.
-
Step 2
At 12 weeks of age your puppy should be eating twice a day. Schedule feeding times for first thing in the morning and not after 8 in the evening. This should be the last food or water for the day.
-
Step 3
In the morning as soon as the puppy eats put him/her outside. Walk around with the puppy until the puppy starts going to the bathroom. When you notice the puppy in the process of relieving itself, tell him/her to go potty. Then when the puppy is done praise him/her.
-
Step 4
Take the puppy back inside. Do not let the puppy run loose in the house without supervision. If you notice the puppy moving in a circular pattern, pick it up quickly, and take it outside. Tell the puppy to go potty as you walk around with it. Repeat every 2 hours. Allow the puppy to have water throughout the day.
-
Step 5
Repeat step 4 every 2 hours. At 8:00 p. m., give the puppy its evening meal. Immediately after dinner, take the puppy out and make sure the puppy has a bowel movement.
-
Step 6
Right before bedtime take the puppy out again. Make sure to tell the puppy while the puppy is going, go potty! Put the puppy in its crate without food or water. Also, do not put any blankets or anything in the bottom of the crate. Puppies are den dwellers. Dogs will normally not potty where they sleep. This is why it is very important not to get a crate that is too big.
-
Step 7
Repeat these steps everyday! Be consistent! Once the puppy is crate trained, you can buy a larger crate for the puppy.
-
Step 8
Remember to supervise the puppy! Do not let the puppy just run all over your house. Once a dog marks its territory, it will relieve itself in the same spot. The smell isn't easy to get out of the carpet and it is almost impossible to break the dog from going potty in that spot.
-
Step 9
Make sure to clean up accidents quickly! Remember your puppy is a baby and wants to please you. Be patient!
