Creating you own SMS ringtones allows you to create personalized SMS ringtones for your phone's contact list to help you distinguish between texters. Creating these ringtones is quick and free.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Audacity (or similar audio-editing software)
  • Audio File (for sampling)
  1. Step 1

Download and install a copy of Audacity from the program's website (see link in Resources). Launch the program after you've downloaded the program's installation wizard.

  2. Step 2

Locate the folder containing the audio file you'd like to sample for your SMS ringtone. Drag and drop the into the blank gray window in Audacity's main menu. Audacity will take a few seconds to import the file.

  3. Step 3

Use the playback buttons at the top of Audacity to listen to your audio file and decide what short region of the file will be used for your ringtone. Keep in mind that SMS ringtones are generally shorter than ringtones for phone calls---usually less than 10 seconds long.

  4. Step 4

Left-click and hold onto the point of the audio file where you'd like the ringtone to begin. While still holding down the left mouse button, drag your mouse's cursor across the the point that you'd like the sample to stop.

  5. Step 5

Click the button tagged "Trim Outside Selection" to remove all the unwanted areas of the sound file, leaving a short audio clip.

  6. Step 6

Click on the "File" heading in the upper-left corner of Audacity. Under the "File" menu, click on the heading "Export as MP3" to save your ringtone in MP3 format. Choose "WAV," if your phone does not support MP3s as an SMS ringtone.

  7. Step 7

Use the Explorer window that appears to name your ringtone, and browse for a location on your computer to which save it.
