Step 1
If you are just starting out fishing, learn how to fish effectively by studying the latest and oldest fishing techniques. You can find advice about how to catch fish on the internet, in magazines and books, and by watching instructional fishing programs on t.v. Go fishing with people that already know how to fish effectively. You can learn a lot in just one trip. Go fishing as often as possible to learn how to identify conditions and structure of areas on the water that are likely to produce fish.
-
Step 2
Purchase quality fishing tackle. You are not likely to land a big fish with cartoon character themed fishing equipment. Fishing equipment designed for children will not stand up to the demands of regular fishing. You can purchase a decent fishing rod and reel from Walmart for well under $50.
-
Step 3
Talk to the other fishermen you meet while on fishing excursions. Check in at your local bait shop and talk to the people there about what the fish are doing. You are likely to get some good tips about where the fish are and what they are biting on.

Step 4
Sign up for an online fishing tournament. See the link below.
