1
Insert an SD card and the battery in the slot located on the bottom of the camera. The SD card included with the camera is only large enough to hold a few pictures. Consider purchasing an SD card with a capacity of several GB so you can save all the pictures you might want to take with the camera without switching out cards.

2
Power the camera on by pressing the "On/Off" button on the top of the camera. Use the switch at the top of the camera to choose between Photo and Video mode. Photo mode is indicated by the image of a green camera; Video mode is indicated by the image of a video camera.

Point the camera at a subject and press the shutter button down halfway to use the SD870's autofocus. Once your subject is in focus, depress the shutter button down the remainder of the way to take a picture. Press the button that has a "Play" icon beside it to review any pictures you have already taken. Press the button with a trash can icon beside it to delete any pictures you have taken that you do not want. The trash can icon will only work while you are in Review mode, taking pictures.
-
4
Press the button on the back of the camera with the flower beside it to enter "Macro Mode." Macro Mode allows you to keep objects in focus that may be close to the camera lens. The mode is typically used for taking pictures of things like flower, coins or words on a page.
-
5
Press the button that look like a broken circle to set the self timer on the camera. Once in Self-Timer Mode, set up your shot the way you would like it to look, and then press the shutter button down. You will have 10 seconds from the time you depress the shutter to get into the picture before the camera takes the shot.
-
6
Press the button with a lightning bolt icon beside it to turn off the flash on the SD870. Many places such as plays, concerts, and museums will ask that you turn your flash off when taking pictures.

This camera blows. When you have it set to autoflash and it automatically realizes that the flash is not required, it takes great photos without the flash. But once you turn the flash off with the same shot, same lighting, it requires a tripod.
