Many credit-card companies allow you to take a cash advance from your credit line. American Express calls their program for cash advances "Express Cash." This program assigns a PIN number to your card so you can withdraw money at compatible ATMs.

Instructions

1. Call American Express at 1-800-CASH-NOW (1-800-227-4669) to enroll in the Express Cash program. Speak your account number or enter it using your phone's keypad. Press "0" to speak with an operator.

2. Confirm your identity with the customer-service representative by answering the questions about your personal information. Request to be enrolled in the Express Cash program. You will need to choose a four-digit PIN number to use for cash withdrawals.

3. Ask the representative what your account's cash-advance limit is. Also, ask what the interest rate is for cash advances and if there is a fee incurred.

4. Use the "ATM Finder" tool on the American Express website to locate an ATM in your area that will accept your American Express card.

5. Visit the ATM and insert your American Express card. Enter the personal identification number you designated for your account. Select an amount to withdraw that is no more than your account's cash-advance limit.
