Ensure that there is a lot of vegetation. Koi fish love the dark, it's surprising but true. Keep a good amount of natural vegetation either around or in the pond in order to assure that the fish are not subject to excessive amounts of sunlight. Vegetation will also help you keep the algae down as well, which will benefit the fish even more.

Blue food dye can help immensely. If algae seems to be taking over your pond you need to obtain natural blue dye. Any blue coloring will do. Depending on the size of your pond will be dependent on how much dye you should add to the water. Normally one small container is excellent for a 2000-5000 gallon pond. The dye allows the algae to feed for heat exposure which will inadvertently cause it to die. The blue dye is also safe for your fish as well.

Ensure your pump is working correctly. Every pond should have a water pump hooked up to it. The pump is great for sucking out any impurities in the water. The pump acts as a purifier, pushing bad water in and good water out. Assure that the pump is high power as Koi's need a lot of oxygen in order to survive.

Utilize barley wheat. Barley wheat is great for keeping the algae down in your Koi pond as well as dissipating any cloudiness in the water. Simply drop 2 bags of barley wheat to the bottom of a 5000 gallon pond. Add an additional bag for every 2500 gallons there after.
