How to File with the IRS for Free
Filing with the IRS by April 15 is the duty of all earners in the United States. Some prefer to seek the assistance of tax professionals while others opt to file themselves. If you wish to file your own tax return with the IRS, you can do so without cost if you have earned less than $56,000 for the filing year.

Go to www.irs.gov.

Click "Individuals" from the menu bar near the top of the IRS website homepage.

Select "E-file" from the IRS Resources menu located at the left of the page, midway down.

Select "Free File" from the "E-file Topics" menu at the top left of the page. You will be given a list of companies who are partnered with the IRS to provide free filing.

Choose a company with whom to file. You will be taken away from the IRS site to the authorized filing company site.

Follow the prompts for filing. You will need to include your filing status (single, head of household, etc.), your earnings, and your deductions. Once you have completed your filing, the information will be filed with the IRS. If a refund is in order, you will receive your payment as soon as three weeks later.
