1
Decide whether you want to rent or buy a rug shampoo machine. Renting makes sense if you clean your carpets once a year. Otherwise you may want to consider buying one. If you rent a machine, be careful which store you rent from. The lower the cost of the machine, the less likely it has been cleaned and maintained properly.

Look for rug shampoo machines that have a hose attachment. This makes cleaning stairs very easy. You can even clean sofas and other furniture with the hose attachment.

3
Select a rug shampoo machine with a large water tank size. If the tank is too small, you will only be able to clean a very small section of carpet before having to empty the tank. It can get extremely tiresome to empty a tank twenty times just to clean one room.

Test out the rug shampoo machine at the store by rolling it back and forth like a vacuum. It should move easily and not be too heavy. Remember, if it is heavy to move at the store, it will be two to three times as heavy once it's filled with water.

Consider the type of cleaning solution that the machine requires. Some machines require you to use a name brand carpet cleaning solution which can be expensive. If you plan to clean your rugs frequently the cost of the cleaning solution will really add up over time. Ideally, you want a machine that will clean efficiently using any cleaning solution.

Finally, check the cord length. You want a cord long enough to reach multiple rooms without having to unplug it. A retractable or winding cord is also a plus, as it will stay out of your way while you are cleaning.
