The website for FEMA is at www.fema.gov. The home page has a link for "Jobs" under the "Quick Links" menu. Select "Jobs" to be taken to the agency's employment opportunities page.

    • 2

On the opportunities page, use the search criteria to narrow your job choice by location, by full or part time and by type of employment. When you have made your desired selections, select "Search" at the bottom of the form. "Reset Form" is next to the "Search" button and will reset your selections. The search will give a listing of available jobs that meet your selected criteria.

    • 3

From the list of available jobs, select one that interests you. The link will take you to a page with a job description, qualifications and application instructions or it will have an additional link to the job at the usajobs.gov website. Review the job description, requirements, qualifications and how to apply for the position. Determine if this is a position you qualify for and want to apply for. Write down the job title, the employment opportunity number and closing date for each job that interests you. Printing out the job description will help with applying.

    • 4

Download the Optional Application for Federal Employment, or OF 612 Form. The form has interactive fields that allow you to fill in all of the required information on your computer screen. Complete the form as accurately as possible; express your qualifications in relation to the job requirements. Any additional pages you send in must include your name and Social Security number.

    • 5

Government job applications are scored on various criteria related to the job qualifications. Most positions require a separate narrative statement concerning the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) described in the job description. Study the KSAs carefully and write your narrative statement to show how your qualifications meet the job requirements.

    • 6

The completed OF 612 form must be submitted by the closing date. Applications may be sent in by regular mail, email or fax. The correct email and fax numbers are provided at the bottom of the job description page. Follow the directions to ensure your application is properly completed and goes to the correct location.

    • 7

Applications for each position are scored and ranked on how well they meet the required knowledge, skills and abilities. The qualified applications are then sent to the official who ultimately decides which applicant gets the position. Be ready to supply any additional information requested from FEMA.

Tips & Warnings

  • Getting a government job is based on meeting the written requirements. Your application should show how well you match the requirements. Check the FEMA website often for new job openings. Some positions are only posted for a few days. Job search results have RSS feed capability to keep you updated on new job opportunities.

  • A résumé or other written form can be used to submit an application. If the alternative form does not have the required information, it can negatively impact your application. Failure to provide a narrative statement will probably prevent your application from being forwarded to the selecting official.
