How to Rip a DVD to a CD-R
You can copy a DVD onto a CD, but because of size restrictions on the CD you will be saving film clips instead of a continuous movie. You'll use a copy program to save the information on the DVD as a digital file on your Macintosh hard drive. Another program will copy the digital file onto the CD.
Things You'll Need
- Mac the Ripper DVD "ripping" (or copying) program
- Toast Titanium 10 Disc burning program
- Blank recordable CD-R discs
Instructions
-
Ripping the DVD
-
1
Run Mac the Ripper and select "Save To" from the file menu to tell the program where to save the DVD file.
-
2
Insert DVD into the DVD drive and wait for the title to appear on Mac the Ripper's title line.
-
-
3
Press the "Go" button and wait for it to copy the DVD to the hard drive.
Burning the CD
-
4
Run Toast, select the the "Preferences" menu, and select "Show Legacy formats and settings" from the General menu. Then close the Preferences window.
-
5
Select the "Video" tab at the top right of Toast and then select the Video CD or Super Video CD from the sub menu below it. (Super Video CDs are of higher quality than Video CDs, but have only 20 minutes of play time versus 60.)
-
6
Choose the video quality -- from "Good" to "Best" -- by moving the slider near the bottom right in Toast (this affects the time it takes to make the CD). Also, if desired, select a Menu style from the drop-down menu above the slider.
-
7
Drag the Video_TS folder that created from the DVD by Mac the Ripper into the open space in Toast. You will now see a number of film clips presented in order from top to bottom.
-
8
Highlight unneeded clips and press the "Delete" key. A horizontal bar at the bottom will go from green to red to show you the space remaining (available) on the blank CD that will be burned.
-
9
Press the red Record button in the lower right-hand corner and enter a name for the CD in the window that pops up.
-
10
Insert the blank CD-R into the drive tray and hit "Close Tray" on the pop-up window. You will get a message if there is not enough space on the blank CD -- otherwise Toast will now make the disc for you.

Tips & Warnings
If you get a message that there is not enough room on the CD for the film clip(s), try changing the Video setting to Video CD instead of Super Video CD.
Copying a DVD involves copyright laws that must be taken into consideration. Additional player software may be needed to play Video CDs or Super Video CDs on the computer.
