The first step to getting a job as a police officer is to have a clean police record. If you were arrested as a youth this may be forgiven, but you need to have a clean record as an adult. You will also need to have a good driving record, as this will be check along with many other aspects of your life.

The second step is to get a degree in criminal justice(this is not a requirement, but it will greatly aid you in your effort to become a police officer). Once you start applying for jobs in law enforcement you will have to start taking written tests. These tests can be difficult so you will want to buy some police exam study guides. These guides will give you a lot of helpful information for when you are taking your written tests. You will most likely have to take several of these written tests for different police departments, not many people get hired by the first police department that they apply to.

The third step is to take and pass an oral examination. These oral examinations consist of several police officers interviewing you on a wide range of subjects. When you go to these interviews every detail matters. Make sure your hair is done neatly, you are wearing a suit and tie, your shoes are polished, and that you sit up straight and make eye contact when you are answering questions. Do not use slang, and make sure to address everyone interviewing you as "sir" or "mam". When the interview is over make sure to shake the hand of each interviewer and thank them for their time.

The fourth step is to pass the background check. When you are asked about your background be completely honest. There is no point in lying as the police have great resources to find out about your past, and you will also be given a polygraph test...so do not lie about your past. If you have an event in your past you are not proud of, it is better to just admit it and say that you learned from your mistake.

The next test is passing the polygraph(lie detector test). Be completely honest on this test, if you are caught lying you will fail the recruitment process and lose a shot at getting hired by the police department. Also, do not attempt to use countermeasures against the polygraph test(countermeasures are methods to throw off the test as to whether you are telling the truth or not). Any experienced polygraph examiner will pick up on these tactics and you will be removed from the recruitment process. Once you have passed all these tests you are ready to be hired by the police department and go to the police academy for training.
