Instructions

    • 1

On a flat table, lay down your piece of batting that is the same size or slightly larger than your fabric.

    • 2

Next, you will lay your backing fabric, right side up, over the batting making sure the fabric and batting is all spread out evently.

    • 3

Now you will lay your top fabric, right side down, over the top fabric making sure it is all spread out evenly and using your straight pins, you will pin the 3 layers together all around the edges.

    • 4

Now you are ready to sew the quilt together using your sewing machine. If you have a quilting foot for your machine, it will help to change to that foot. Using a straight stitch, sew all the way around the quilt, 1/2 inch from the edges, and leave a 7 inch area open for turning the quilt.

    • 5

After sewing all around, now you will turn the quilt right side out (if you trim the corners, it will make turning the corners easier). Now you will need to turn the raw edges in on the opening that was left unsewed for turning and pin them.

    • 6

Using the sewing machine, you will topstitch all around the edges of the quilt, 1/4 inch from the edge, making sure you catch the edges that were turned under and pinned.

    • 7

Your last step is to tie through all 3 layers of the quilt so the batting will not shift and bunch up when the quilt is washed. To do that, you will thread a large holed embroidery needle with a long piece of six-strand embroidery floss and you will insert the needle down through all the layers and then back up about 1/4 inch away from where you inserted the needle and pull the floss through until there is about a three inch tail remaining and using your scissors, you will cut the floss remaining on the needle the same size as the tail and you will tie the two ends together and make a double knot so it will not come undone. You can trim that so that only 1 inch remains on the top of the quilt. Continue in that manner tying floss into knots through all the layers all over the top of the quilt every 6 inches apart and you are done.
