Things You'll Need:
- Poster Board or other paper big enough to put up on the wall.
- Colored markers
- Stickers or other age appropriate items that you can glue or tape to the base.
-
Step 1
Write down all of the things YOU think your child has to look forward to when they get back to school. Remember back to when you were their age. What did you look forward to at 6, 10, 14?
-
Step 2
Ask your child what they like about school. For the child that doesn't like school of course this will be difficult. If they don't like the subject matter you may have to point out the positives of other things like socialization etc. Write down all of the things they like.
-
Step 3
You may choose to involve your child in making a poster or you may choose to present it to them as a gift. Some ideas for posters are brightly colored drawings of school and the things they like or computer printouts of pictures, magazine cutouts etc. Be creative or allow your child to create a collage. This usually interests younger children and artistic older children. Put the poster up on the wall a week or two before school starts. This helps them transition by reminding them of the positives of school. Students actually learn better if they begin school with a positive attitude. If you are open to ideas your mind is like a sponge and soaks up knowledge. If there is resistance it's like a door that has to be opened and it takes more effort.
