When a dog is afraid of a thunderstorm it can be a very real problem for the dog owner. The dog may become destructive or go to the bathroom in the house as a result of the high anxiety and it is important for dog owners to do what they can to help their dog relax.

Things You'll Need:

  • Veterinarian
  • Safe place for the dog
  • Dog toys and treats
  1. Step 1

The first thing that a dog owner must do with a storm phobic dog is to ignore the behavior. By comforting the dog, the owner is telling the dog that it is ok to be fearful and this will only compound the problem. The best thing for the owner to do is act normally, ignore the storm and ignore the anxious behavior that the dog is exhibiting.

  2. Step 2

Next, the dog owner needs to take the dog to the veterinarian. A full exam will help rule out any physical problems that the dog may have that could be contributing to the storm phobia. Additionally, the vet can provide information on some of the medications available for anxious dogs. Medication should be a last resort, though, after training has been attempted.

  3. Step 3

Provide the dog a safe place to go during a storm and teach the dog with treats that it is a safe place to go. This can be a dog crate, a closet, a dog bed behind a chair or any other place where the dog might feel safe.

  4. Step 4

Finally, the dog owner needs to use toys and treats to distract the dog from the storm. Whenever the dog relaxes during play, the owner should immediately provide a treat to reward the dog for the appropriate reaction to the storm. This will help the dog learn that storms are not a time for fear but a time for play or for sleeping in a safe place.

Tips & Warnings
  • While there is medication available for anxious dogs, it may be better to attempt training before resorting to these types of solutions.
  • Be sure that your dog has a safe place to get out of the storm so that the dog does not have good reason to be fearful.
