Things You'll Need:
- espresso machine
- espresso-grind coffee
- milk or water
- espresso cup
-
Step 1
Start by familiarizing yourself with the machine. The at-home espresso machine is usually very basic and features one brewing cup and a steam wand. The brewing cup is the metal cup that is attached to the long handle. It twists into a bracket in the overhang, above the drip tray. The steam wand is a metal spicket that sticks out of the side of the machine. You should see controls for these items on the machine. You should be able to turn each of these items on and off.
-
Step 2
Once you have examined the machine, you can start making your coffee. To start, make sure the machine is off and unscrew the cap at the top of the machine so that you can pour in some water. WARNING! Do not unscrew this cap if you have just made espresso or if any of the switches on the machine are on or have recently been on. The pressure and heat could spray steam and result in serious burns. Pour enough water to brew the espresso and do not overfill the container.
-
Step 3
Once the machine is filled with water, tightly screw the cap back on the machine. Fill the brewing cup with espresso-grind coffee. Pack down the espresso grounds and screw the brewing cup into the brackets that hold it in the overhang of the espresso machine. Place a receptacle underneath the brewing cup and turn the machine on. Your brew should start trickling into the receptacle.
-
Step 4
Once the espresso has been brewed, make sure to turn off the brewing switch. If you want to steam some milk or water, use a metal container to hold the milk or water and insert the steaming wand into the milk. Turn on the steaming wand switch and slowly move the milk or water around as the steam heats the liquid.
