Things You'll Need:
- Thread to match the color of your pants.
- sewing needle
- time
-
Step 1
Make sure your thread is almost the exact color of the pants you are about to hem.
-
Step 2
If you are hemming the pants for someone else, then have then put the pants on. Fold them underneath to get the right length that they are comfortable with. If you are hemming them for yourself, this could be a be a bit difficult. After you get the right length, put a pin in the spot where you will need to hem the pants.
-
Step 3
Take the pants off and put them inside out. Use measuring tape to measure from the hemline to the end of the pants and make sure they are the same length on both legs. No one wants uneven pant legs. Now fold the end of the pants to the pin.
-
Step 4
You should now press the hem area with a low setting iron. It makes it easier to keep the fabric in one place.
-
Step 5
Now you have to pin all the way around the pant leg. Start from the seam on the side of the pant leg, put a pin in that spot. Now continue to put pins all the way around the pant leg. This holds the pant leg where you want it.
-
Step 6
Now here we go with the hemming. Use only ONE piece of thread!! Make several knots on one end so that the thread does not come out of the stitch.
-
Step 7
Place your needle sightly underneath the hem line and pick up a very little (maybe 3 or 4 strands of fabric) bit of fabric and pull the thread tight that way you can not see the knot. (Make sure the knot is on the inside of the pants.)
-
Step 8
Next where the very end of the pants end where the fabric is folded sew the needle through the folded area. This way it hides the thread. This is a very useful trick since all pants are finished mostly the same way.
-
Step 9
Then repeat the steps. After threading through the fold, exit the fold and again pick up another 3 or 4 strands of fabric and pull tight. Make sure not to pull so tight that the fabric bunches. You want it to look like there is no thread at all. On the inside of the pants you should see no thread at all. On the outside of the pants there should be little thread about every half inch apart. You want to try and make the hem as straight as possible, that way the pant leg does not fall crooked. After you are done tie the thread off and cut.
