How to Make Your PC Run Faster in Windows XP

Have you noticed that your computer is slower than it used to be? Do you have popups taking over your internet browsing experience? Save money by cleaning your PC yourself and not paying costly PC repair costs.

Things You'll Need:

  • Basic computer skills
  • A few hours of your time
  1. Step 1

    If you are unsure how to complete any of the following steps, there are links to step-by-step instructions for each of these steps listed in the 'Resources' section at the bottom of this article.

  2. Step 2

    Thoroughly remove all temp files from Windows.

  3. Step 3

    Remove all old and unwanted programs. This can include demo games or programs that have expired or programs that you no longer use or want.

  4. Step 4

    Remove all Spyware, Adware, and Malware from your PC. It is advised that you use programs that are designed for each of these. Some programs will remove most files but not all.

  5. Step 5

    Defrag your hard drive and tweak the icons on your desktop to load programs faster.

Tips & Warnings
  • Following these steps will dramatically increase the performance of your PC running Windows XP. Make sure to do this at least once a month to keep your computer running like the machine that you purchased.
  • Make sure that you back up your PC and registry before doing any of these steps. Creating a restore point would be advised as well. This will help if you accidentally remove files or programs that you need.
