So if your little one is like my 16 month old, regular playdough just isn't for them yet. Everything constantly goes into her mouth! :) But there are many other ways of showing your little one how to be creative with homemade playdough that is safe for him/her... Mind you there are at least 10 types if not more kinds of edible playdough that you can make I am only showing you one here today that is really easy and the only they thing that you may have to purchase if you don't already have it is cream of tartar (which can be found in any grocery store - with the spices)

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 3 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 1 small package of any unsweetened koolaid mix (optional)
  • food coloring (optional)
  1. Step 1

Begin by mixing all the dry ingrediants into a large saucepan (if you choose to use the kool aid package then mix it in here at this time as well).

  2. Step 2

While stirring dry ingrediants over a medium heat slowly add the water and oil (which should be mixed) until it thickens to look like dough.

  3. Step 3

Once mixture has formed into a dough, scoop in out onto a table or counter top (wax paper underneath is a great idea so that the dough will not leave a sticky mess on your counters)

  4. Step 4

Knead the dough until it is cool enough to be touched by little hands... If you have already added the kool aid mix into your mixture you are finished and your kids can enjoy. If not and you have chosen to use the food coloring continue onto the next step.

  5. Step 5

While kneading the dough add ONLY a FEW drops of whatever color you want the dough to be and continue kneading until the dough has the desired color. (This tends to be messier on hands but easier when you have a specific color you are trying to create)

  6. Step 6

BE Creative, Enjoy and Have Fun with your kids... Look at this as some great edible colorful bonding time :)

Tips & Warnings
  • The kool aid added to your mixture will produce the color of the chosen package as well as a sweet kool aid smell - however this tends to make the child even more enticed to put the playdough in his/her mouth
  • If you choose to use the food coloring - just a note of warning your hands WILL be colorful... but it is nothing that a few good hand washes can't take off... This is meant to be fun, so why not get messy.
