Instructions

    • 1

Select or cut a log no longer than four feet long and no smaller than twelve inches in diameter.

    • 2

Mark the log lengthwise down the middle as straight as possible with a large crayon. Mark the log on the line one foot from each end and in the middle of the line.

    • 3

Place a wedge on the middle mark and drive it into the log until it will stay by itself. Place a wedge on the end marks and do the same thing.

    • 4

Rotate from wedge to wedge to wedge driving them in deeper until the log splits in half.

    • 5

Select the best looking half of the log to make the bench.
Split the other half to start the legs.

    • 6

Pick the best of those two and split them again. The pieces will be one eight of the original log.
Cut the splits sixteen inches long.

    • 7

Mark the bottom of the bench log piece in four places for the legs.
Lay the log face down and think of the end like a clock.
The highest point would be twelve o'clock. Mark the bottom at eleven and one o'clock eight inches from the end.

    • 8

Drill a one and one half inch hole three inches deep on each spot holding the drill straight in relation to the curve of the log. Do not try to angle the hole. Aim for the center of what will be the seat part of the log

    • 9

Sharpen one end of the sixteen inch pieces to a blunt point one and one half inches around and three inches long. Make the point as close to round as possible by using a knife or hatchet.
Whittle them down to make them fit but do not make them too small or they will be loose.

    • 10

Place the log seat face down. Drive the four completed pieces into the holes using a mallet. They should fit tight. Make sure they go in the full three inches.

    • 11

Turn the bench over and see how it sits. Only trim bottom of feet if needed or to taste.
