How to Find My Public IP Address

Your public IP address is most likely not the same as your computer's IP address. Your public IP address is your external address that the rest of the world identifies you as. Use this address when you want to connect to your network from other places on the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch a Web browser.

    • 2

Navigate to a site that displays your public IP address, such as MyIPAddress.com (myipaddress.com), WhatIsMyIP.com (whatismyip.com) or Foursquare Innovations (foursquareinnovations.co.uk/IP.php). Then press "Enter."

    • 3

Look for the public IP address result that appears on the Web page. This is the address to use if you want to access your network from a remote location.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your computer's router uses NAT, you won't be able to access your computer directly using your public IP address unless you first forward ports.

  • Unless your public IP address is a static IP address, your public IP address may change.
