Teach Sit

Teaching your dog to sit is one of the staples of basic training, but it can also be one of the most frustrating tricks for your new puppy to master. My method of teaching my Siberian Husky is fool-proof and will have your puppy sitting pretty in no time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog
  • Treats
  • Clicker (optional)
  1. Step 1

Take one of your puppies dog treats and hold it up to your chest. Generally, the dog will sit automatically instead of craning their neck to keep their eye on the treat. If your using a clicker, once the dog sits, click yes and reward the treat - otherwise reward the treat.

  2. Step 2

Once you've completed step 1 a few times, the dog should automatically sit when they see you with a treat. At this point, we want to add the command, "Sit". Hold a dog treat at chest level and say "Sit" once. If your using the clicker, click yes and reward the treat once the dog is sitting.

  3. Step 3

Finally, use the above two steps in multiple settings, to generalize the behavior.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the treats are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
  • Another trick, if instead of sitting your dog decides to jump, you can get them to sit by placing the treat above their nose and moving your hand up and over their head.
  • Don't give any commands multiple times, because you want them to respond the first time, every time.
