Sophisticated Kids Room

A sophisticated kid’s room can seem like an oxymoron. You want a room that you are comfortable with doubling as a guest room while your child wants to infuse their own personal style and throw dirty clothes on the floor. Reach a happy medium by designing a room that is functional that you can both be proud of.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use rich textures. Fabrics will make a kid's room seem luxurious. Microsuede has the richness of velvet while being easy to clean. Put more fragile fabrics out of reach like covering a window cornice in faux silk. Practical and washable fabrics such as denim or cotton can be used on the main living pieces such as the bedding. Find rugs for kid’s rooms that are durable, easy to clean, but still add a feeling of softness. A faux fur rug lends an opulent air to a tween or teen bedroom.

  2. Step 2

Pick an elegant theme. Kid’s rooms don't have to be based around a cartoon character. Choose a theme that matches with the rest of your house. Get your kid in on the decorating so they will be excited about the room. Allowing them to make design choices is a compromise and lets your kid develop their own personal style. If you have a modern house create a contemporary kids room with graphic squares or circles. A more subdued, adult theme can transition as your child grows so you don't have to constantly be redecorating when your kid likes a new movie or musician.

  3. Step 3

Decorate with a whimsical style. Create an elegant nursery designed around cherry blossoms or a Japanese design. Whimsy doesn't mean cartoonish. You can turn your kids room into an enchanted forest that even wedding designers would envy. A wall mural can add an air of sophistication and wonder to the room for a focal point that both you and your children will enjoy looking at for hours.

  4. Step 4

Accessorize with fun items. Be practical. Use items that are durable enough to be thrown around and climbed on to create a children’s room that looks great for years to come. Accessorize with your children’s artwork and favorite toys so they like the elegant theme.

  5. Step 5

Pick a unique color palette. Kids rooms colors don't have to be bright and obnoxious. Bedrooms should invoke slumber and be calming spaces. You don't even have to paint in gender specific colors. Your kid can choose one color while you choose the other for a sophisticated palette of robin egg's blue with black furniture or a rosy pink with chocolate brown accents.
