Catch fruit flies and release them alive outside.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic wrap.
  • 2 pencils or similar shaped objects.
  • Transparent glass or jar.
  • Small piece of fruit.
  1. Step 1

Put away or get rid of all food attracting the fruit flies and clean up the area, or catching the fruit flies will be more difficult and almost impossible.

  2. Step 2

2.1 Lay the 2 pencils parallel on the counter.
2.2 Lay a 6" by 6" piece of plastic wrap over the top of the pencils.
2.3 Put a small amount (1/2 tsp) of fruit on the plastic wrap between the pencils.
2.4 Turn the glass or jar upside down balancing it on top of the pencils with the fruit centered under the glass or jar.

  3. Step 3

3.1 Check on the trap periodically.
3.2 When there are flies on the fruit tap gently on top of the glass or jar and the fruit flies will fly away up into the glass or jar.
3.3 Pick up the glass or jar keeping the open side down, and put your hand or something under the opening.
3.4 Carry the glass or jar outside and release the fruit flies.
3.5 Replace the glass or jar over the fruit again to catch any remaining fruit flies.
3.6 Repeat steps 3.1 through 3.5 until the trap is continually empty.

Tips & Warnings
  • After awhile it will become apparent that all the fruit flies have been caught when the trap is continually empty. Remove the glass or jar and set it aside to be washed. Gently fold up the plastic wrap with the fruit inside and discard it in the trash.
  • Keep the glass or jar away from the counters edge so it won't easily get knocked off and away from children's easy reach.
