How to See Turtles on Oahu
Oahu in Hawaii is one of the best places in the world to encounter a turtle. Unlike other places where turtles shy away from human contact, in Hawaii turtles have become more accustomed to seeing humans and enjoy protected status. You are not even limited to having to go snorkeling or scuba diving to see the turtles as in a number of places they come and bask on beaches.

Go to Laniakea beach. If you do not want to scuba dive or go snorkeling to see the turtles, you will need to go somewhere where the turtles appear out of the water. At Laniakea beach, Hawaiian green turtles crawl ashore almost daily and bask in the sun amongst the tourists and surfers. The turtles are wild and you can see them up close. Laniakea beach is a free attraction.

Book a scuba diving or snorkeling trip. The turtles on Oahu can be seen underwater around the many coral reefs. Visit an area such as Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve and go on a scuba diving or snorkeling trip to see the turtles. You must be licensed or on a course to go scuba diving. This is a great way to see the turtles moving through the water and feeding in their natural habitat.

Abide by turtle protection laws. When viewing turtles on beaches if there are red ropes separating the turtles then keep behind them. Feel free to take photographs, but the ropes are there in public areas to prevent people from abusing the turtles by doing things such as sitting on them. Do not harass the turtles on land or underwater, and certainly do not try to touch them or grab hold of their shell as they swim. Give them between 10 and 15 feet of space.
