Things You'll Need:
- Oil & Filter
- Oil Filter Wrench
- 17mm socket and ratchet
- Drain Pan
- Clean Rags
- Tire Chocks
-
Step 1
Locating the Drain PlugDrive the car for at least 10 minutes to reach operating temperature. Locate a near level to small incline where you will be changing the oil. If you are on a small incline point the front of the car up hill, put the car in park, set the emergency brake and chock the tires.
-
Step 2
Draining the OilPlace a drain pan under the drain plug located on the side of the oil pan at the rear of the engine. Remove the dipstick, and the oil fill cap. Remove the oil drain plug and allow the oil to drain into the pan until it stops. While the oil is draining you can proceed to remove the oil filter.
-
Step 3
Strap WrenchFor this job I used a strap wrench to loosen the oil filter, the oil filter is located on the back side of the engine about halfway down.
-
Step 4
Oil Filter AccessI was able to reach over the top of the engine and get my wrench on then was able to loosen the filer. Once the filter is removed clean the oil filter gasket surface on the engine, make sure none of the old rubber gasket is stuck to the engine this is very important the gasket surface must be clean. Next lubricate the rubber gasket on the new filter and screw it on, tighten ¼ turn once the gasket meets the engine. DO NOT USE A WRENCH! Only tighten oil filter hand tight. Install the drain plug.
-
Step 5
Adding OilFill with your brand of motor oil, start the engine and check for leaks, check the level of the oil on the dipstick and fill to the full mark. Double check for leaks numerous Honda CRV's have been known to catch fire from improper oil filter installation!
