Lightning can be very dangerous. Taking some simple precautions during a lightning storm can help to keep you and your family safe.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find shelter if you are outdoors. Go to the nearest building and go inside. It's true what they say about standing under a tree! Don't stand under or near trees or other tall things like billboards, telephone or utility poles!

  2. Step 2

Stay indoors. If you are already inside, do not go outside. Wait out the storm until it is safe to go outdoors again.

  3. Step 3

Refrain from using the telephone (both cellular or landline) or electrical items - like a computer or television. Stay away from the windows.

  4. Step 4

Pull over if you are driving in your car and wait out the storm before continuing on. If you can, pull over and leave your car!

  5. Step 5

Remember that lightning strikes the highest point, so do what you can NOT to be the highest point!
