Making a bowling ball hook takes a lot of practice. This will go over the basics, but you will have to go to a bowling alley and throw the ball many, many times to get this right.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

First, you need a ball that fits your hand properly for throwing a curve. The thumb should be sunk 3/4 into the thumb hole. The middle and ring fingers should sink only to the first joint, to hold the ball with your finger tips.

  2. Step 2

Step onto the approach. Make sure nobody else is preparing to bowl. You want to be about four strides from the foul line - the line where the lane starts.

  3. Step 3

With a 4 step approach you want to step forward with the foot that is on the side you carry the ball. Holding the ball with both hands near your chest, you want to push the ball forward as you take your first step. Swing the ball back as you make the next step.

  4. Step 4

As you bring the ball forward as you take the final stride, you want to rotate your wrist inward toward your body as you release the ball, you also want to lift a little with your two finger tips.

  5. Step 5

When you release the ball try to watch what arrow it goes through and how much it breaks. This way you can make adjustments on your next throw.

Tips & Warnings
  • Release the ball closer to the lane for more movement
  • Watch how your ball reacts to the lane and make adjustments on your approach
  • You want to make the same approach and have the same release every time you throw the ball. This will allow you to make the proper adjustments when going for spares.
  • The ball will curve less if lofted or bounced on the lane
