1. You need a new appliance, let's say a dishwasher. First, determine what brand you want, and find the exact model number of the dishwasher.

2. Look online for the model number and determine the best price.

3. Go to your local appliance stores. Most stores need the business and will match a competitor's price. When you have the same price from two or more stores, you need a reason to buy from one rather than the other. So you ask them to give you an incentive to buy the dishwasher from them rather than their competition.

4. "What kind of incentive do you mean", they may ask. Give them some options: Free delivery, no sales tax, a gift card or some additional discount. If the salesman balks at this, ask him/her to run it by his manager. Be prepared to make the purchase right then and there if you are given an incentive. If not, go to one of the other stores and see what they will do for you.
